Oh Alaska! Why can't I quit you?

I didn't want to write about you again. I wanted to write a novel, not more about myself. But for some reason, I keep coming back to you. I'm bringing chapters to my writing group, and when I finish reading there is silence. And not silence in a bad way. It is writing itself, this memoir. I can barely hold on to the reins.

For those of you keeping track, I now have three long projects. The fire memoir is still out in the hunt for an agent. I need to get going on that. This project is about half-finished. And there's the novel, THE GEOGRAPHY OF... Read More...

Hello out there! It's been awhile. I've been on a holiday writing hiatus, mostly to finish up my 50 nights in the wilderness goal for 2014. Glad to say that I accomplished that goal..my last night was on 12/30 with three friends in Big Bend National Park. We spent three days backpacking and three nights car camping (did not count for my goal since it was reached by car). So the grand total is 50 nights reached by human power and 54 nights in a tent total...which is almost two months!

Back to writing though. I am getting ready to dive back into the YA climate change novel--how's that... Read More...

Hi everyone! Big news, I finished the revision of the fire memoir and it is out looking for a home. I got tons of title suggestions, and so far am going with FIRE IN THE HEART; a memoir of friendship, loss and wildfire. The person who named this also named THE GEOGRAPHY OF WATER. So maybe there is good luck there.

Now I am just writing essays for my writing group and pondering my next move. I am thinking of diving into another novel, based on childhood stories my sister and I used to make up about a tribe of people who lived in trees and another who lived on the ground. It's a... Read More...

Hey everyone! I'm working on revising my firefighting memoir. I asked an author I admired if he had any suggestions on where to send it, and he mentioned me to his agent. She called me and wants to see the ms. How great is that? I know realistically this approach is how many books get published--it is who you know. Fingers crossed.

Doing this work has brought me back to 1994, when Roger died (the main event of this memoir) and it has been both enjoyable and sad. You have to be really honest with yourself with memoir. My editor called me out on some chapters, where she felt I was... Read More...

Hey everyone! Welcome and pardon the construction tools lying around! This is a new website, isn't it great? Bear with as I learn it...

Let's kick this off with a little contest! I'm starting revision on my next book. It is a memoir of the twenty years I spent on the fireline, fighting wildfires from Alaska to Florida. I was going to call it "Smoke from a Distant Fire" but my lovely editor told me gently that the name of a song probably wasn't a good idea (QUICK! Know the name of the band who sang it?). So there you go. Any ideas? Sadly, you won't win anything, but I will mention... Read More...
